Safety Spotlight with Marty Pollock - February 16, 2026
Winter weather will create dozens of potholes along interstates and highways, and TDOT will be working to repair them as fast as possible. Numerous Work Zones will seemingly pop up along the way and can create special challenges for drivers of large commercial vehicles due to space restrictions. The road work will obviously take place on highways and will more often have reduced travel lanes.
In Tennessee during the calendar year 2025, there were 2,260 Work Zone Crashes, and 487 involved a Large Truck.
Workers were present in 631 of those crashes, and there were 95 secondary crashes.
7 in 10 occurred in an Urban Area
1 out of 14 involved a Distracted Driver
4 out of 15 Fatal Work Zone Crashes involved Alcohol / Drugs
The greater number of crashes were on Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. For more information related to Tennessee Work Zone Crashes or other crash-related information, you can click on: https://www.tn.gov/content/tn/safety/stats/dashboards.html
Reduce your chance of a Work Zone Crash:
Pay attention to work zone signs
Leave enough space between you and others
Be prepared to stop or slow unexpectedly
Watch for traffic and workers going in and out of the work zone
If possible, Research Your Route before setting out on the road, avoid work zones, and use any available detours. A Work Zone is a No Accident Zone!
